Cro-Mag Rally

Watch gameplay video
Rating: ★★★½☆

After the price drop from $9.99 to $5.99, I decided to finally give this game a try. You see, I’ve largely been avoiding it because of my experience with Wingnuts Moto Chaser. I didn’t think a fast-paced racer could be pulled off on the iPhone with solid, responsive controls. Luckily, Cro-Mag Rally convinces me otherwise, and now I have no problem buying other racers in hope for more racing fun.

There are two gameplay modes to play, Race mode where you race around the track for 3 laps against 3 computer opponents, and Gather mode where you have to gather arrowheads (by running over it) during the course of racing around the track. Once you’ve gathered them all, you then need to win the race.

As hinted about above, Cro-Mag Rally has great control, and has a short learning curve to pick up and play. There’s no manual in-game, but you can visit Pangea Software’s website to read instructions on the game. There are 9 tracks to race on, each progressing in difficulty, with 11 different vehicles you can choose from, each with different characteristics; speed, traction, etc. You’ll find many powerups on the tracks you can use to help you win races – throw exploding bones, oil slicks behind you, speed boost, homing pigeons, bottle rockets, land minds, and more.

The graphics are well-done, and each track has their own dinstinctive style and personality. Everything’s colorful and blocky, just like a caveman would like it. However, I did find that after a couple of laps, the iPhone would get so hot that it’d get uncomfortable having to press on the gas/accelerate to finish the race. Other graphic-intensive games warm up the iPhone as well, but not to the point that it becomes uncomfortable to hold.

Sound effects are done to superb effect in Cro-Mag Rally, and really liven up the game as a whole. The music, as you can imagine, has a great tribal beat to it and complements the style of the game quite nice.
