Tap Tap Revenge

Watch gameplay video
Rating: ★★★★☆

There’s no denying the rapid popularity of Tap Tap Revenge. They have recently announced that there are over a million users playing the game. They are fast approaching 2000 reviews in the App Store, and are currently sitting at an impressive 4-star rating. So what’s so great about it?

Well, it’s basically a portable version of Guitar Hero or Rock Band, and we all know how popular those two games are. The gameplay consists of you tapping the screen to the rhythm of the game. Dots ride down three colored lines; red, green, and blue. As they approach the bottom of the screen, you have to tap the glowing line right when the dot touches it before they disappear altogether. The concept sounds simple, but more difficult songs require deft fingers and reaction time. Songs are divided up amongst 4 different difficulty levels; easy, medium, hard, and extreme. There’s a nicely put together tutorial if you need to learn how to play.

Unfortunately for Tapulous, developer of Tap Tap Revenge, the inability to tap into the user’s own music library to play on severely castrates what could’ve been a truly stellar game. It’s not their fault, Apple has prevented any 3rd party applications from being able to access a user’s own music library. The solution to this problem is to give the user a choice, with a prompt that pops up asking the user if So-and-So application can access your music library. The jailbroken version of Tap Tap was called Tap Tap Revolution and allowed for you to use your own songs, and it was great.

Therefore, Tapulous has to rely on free, and legal, songs made available to them to use in their game. This means you are stuck with whatever they put into the game, and depending on your music taste, you can either like the selection a lot, a little bit, or not at all. With the rapid popularity of the game, though, music labels are taking notice and there’s a possibility of spinoff Tap Tap games utilizing a label’s lineup; much like what we’re seeing with Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Which is probably why Tap Tap Revenge is free. It’s a good strategy on Tapulous’s part.

For example, a music label could work a deal with Tapulous and suddenly we’ll see a new game, Tap Tap: Aerosmith. You will have to buy these individual packages though, since Apple doesn’t make it an option for developers to put their own stores in their games. At least not yet. Why should they? Apple are making scads of money, so cutting them out of the picture won’t appeal to them.

The graphics are slickly polished, there’s really nothing to complain about in the graphics department. Even the menu is sleek and stylish. You can play either one-player or two-player, with the two-player taking a unique approach to allow two people to play on the same iPhone/iPod Touch. As you complete a song, you are presented with a screen providing your final score, accuracy, streak, and the ability to submit your score to the global high score list, to challenge a friend (basically sends an email to your friend with your score, challenging them to beat it), and to play the next song.

There’s not much sound effects to go with the game, but that’s because the focus is the music that’s playing. The music, of course, being the song you’re playing. As I mentioned above, the music can be a hit-or-miss affair, largely depending on your own musical taste. Personally I find the selection too limited, which severely hinders the game from being truly extraordinary. You can, however, download new tracks as Tapulous makes them available. At the time of the posting of this review, there are 18 songs to choose from.

How do people get 300,000 points score and when you play on a song you can only get to 90,000 ?

Makaveli on November 22nd, 2008

well when on the screen it comes up revenge shake teh phoen quickly and all the balls will be snow white with blue background this is where you will get most of the points as it is 8x bonus which means basically you get about 800 points per hit even more if you can continue doing this throughout most of the song

hope this helped

There has been times when I play online, and I get every single beat, and I get the 8x thing as soon as it comes up. Yet, sometimes I end up in 2nd place and when I look at the score I have like 200,000 and the other person has like 500,000.
Now, if I get every single note, and I got the 8x revenge thing as soon as it came yet I came in 2nd, there’s no way the guy ahead of me could have done any better. But why is it that he got like 300,000 points more than I did?

What do the arrows mean and how do you hit them

Minimachine on January 29th, 2009

The arrows mean you have to shake the iPod like you’re hitting a drum. Don’t be too violent, though because it will fly out of your hands. I personally don’t like the arrows so I turn them off in the settings menu.

hi

linda on March 3rd, 2009

At the bottom when you hit a note why is it that som etimesthe target is blue or yellow instead of green when you know you hit it?

Lisa on June 6th, 2009

If you hit the note too soon it turns blue. Light blue is a closer timing. If it’s too late it turns orange. A bit later you lost it and it turns red. A 100% accuracy leads to green.
