MetaSquares is a simple game, but winning sure isn’t. The game is played by placing pegs to form squares. Squares can be created at any angle, and the bigger the square, the more points it is worth. You play against the computer, and the first to reach 150 points wins. You start off on the first level, which is easy to win, but after each win you progress in levels and the bot becomes smarter, starts figuring out what you’re doing, tries to trick you, and so on. I’ve managed to get up to level 6 so far and it is getting wily.
Much like chess, in MetaSquares you have to think ahead and prevent your opponent from creating squares. And just like in chess, I’ve gotten frustrated (in a good way) when my opponent figured out what I was doing and messed up my square. Seriously, I had no idea that I would find this game so much fun, but I really do. I’ve found myself coming back to it time and time again.
The options menu provides the ability to choose a level (provided you’ve unlocked that level), the time of the piece lock (if you make a mistake, this time lets you fix it), and to turn on and off Quick Play.
It helps that the game is pleasing to the eye. The graphics are slick and easy on the eyes. There are numerous themes you can choose from, the default being my favorite (orange blue, colors of the Florida Gators!) Other themes are an etched theme, a miami-like theme with neon blue and pink, rustic theme. wooden theme, and a steel theme. All of them are well done and keep the game feeling fresh.
Sound effects are sparse, but do the job just fine. There’s no music, although you can listen to your own music library with no problems.

Hey, thanks for the review. Glad you like MetaSquares. The default theme is not coincidental; I went to UF and am a die hard fan.
Awesome! My sister recently graduated from UF, and my dad and I are both lifelong Gators fans. And as they say, it’s a great time to be a Gators fan. This season is going to be exciting!
