Apple Calls iPod Touch Gaming Device

Today, during Apple’s Let’s Rock event, Apple officially positioned the iPod Touch (and iPhone) as a gaming device. They showed off Spore: Origins (see our recent review), Real Soccer 2009 (shown above), and the upcoming Need for Speed racing game to the crowd to firmly cement Apple’s movement into the handheld gaming market.

TUAW claimed that even Steve Job said the iPod Touch is the best handheld gaming device on the market. The new iPod Touch is being marketed as “the funnest iPod ever.” This is a really positive movement for the iPhone/iPod Touch industry, and we should start seeing even more games showing up in the App Store thanks to this event and Apple’s willingness to embrace the handheld gaming market.

The 2nd generation iPod Touch is an almost perfect device. It combines top-notch video/audio, world-class UI, great casual gaming, hundrets of apps, and full access to the Internet into a single, beautiful package. To sum it up neatly: Untouchable. Well — almost. It has one big flaw if you have invested in accessories: it may not be compatible with them, as Apple has changed the iPod connector pin-out (again). With those reservations, I recommend the Touch to anyone. Also great: owners of the 1st gen Touch can get most of these goodies with a simple, inexpensive software upgrade.
