Zombie Invasion

Watch gameplay video
Rating: ★★☆☆☆

In Zombie Invasion, you shoot down a horde of zombies shambling their way towards you. You start off with a pistol with unlimited ammo, but some zombies will drop more powerful weapons (with limited ammo), such as a shotgun. You also get grenades that clears the screen of any zombies in view. As you progress through levels (broken up into days) the zombies amble their way towards you faster, and a new, faster zombie will come running at you as well. Each zombie has a health bar over its head indicating the amount of health left for it.

Shooting zombies is done by simply tapping on them. One of the biggest issues with the game is the pacing. The game starts off way too slow and easy. By Day 5, you’ll be bored out of your mind with the lack of challenge. There’s no difficulty mode to choose from (although the developer promises them in a future update.) Even in the later levels, Day 7+ when the action is faster, it is still as boring and repetitive as the earlier, easier levels.

Visually, the game looks decent, if a bit static. The animation of the zombies is well-down, especially as they are taking fire from whatever gun you’re using at the time. The character you play stands in place the entire game, while the zombies come towards you. The scene remains the same throughout each level, and it’s too dark to really say much about the game graphically. The grenade explosion is a joke, and not really writing about. Let’s just say that it’ll leave a puzzled look on your face.

The game has a soundtrack, and it’s decent as well, although I much preferred listening to Bauhaus’s Bela Lugosi’s Dead while playing. The sound effects of the guns are a hit and miss affair. The default pistol you start off with sounds more like a peashooter than a gun, and the shotgun just doesn’t sound as satisfying as a real shotgun would sound.

There’s no save state, so if you got bored and wanted to move on, or got a phone call, you can’t return to the level you left at. You have to start over, and as I mentioned above, the pacing of the game starts off extremely slow, making it a chore to get to the faster, more challenging portion of the game.

I did like that there are Daily, Monthly, and All-Time global scoreboards in the game, so when posting high scores, you have a chance to see your name up on the list. That is, if you managed to stick around long enough to get a high score.

Unfortunately, Zombie Invasion just isn’t a very exciting game in the end. The potential is certainly there, especially if they manage to make the game much like Crimsonland’s Survival mode, which is a personal favorite of mine. If the developers updated the game with a more exciting pace, and add more variety to the gameplay and different modes, then Zombie Invasion will be well worth getting. At this time, though, it’s more of an alpha version of a game that was rushed out too soon.
