Blackbeard’s Assault

Watch gameplay video
Rating: ★★★★½

Based on the online Flash game of the same name at Candystand.com, Blackbeard’s Assault for the iPhone and iPod Touch brings the fast and furious action puzzle to the App Store. Just like in Puzzloop, Zuma, and Luxor, the goal is to remove all the balls from play as fast as you can. You do this by matching 2 or more colors with the same colored cannonball in your cannon. The line of balls will head towards the end (X marks the spot on the map), zig-zagging its way through on the path, and you lose a life if any ball reaches the end.

Blackbeard’s Assault features a light-hearted and, at times, silly story about the infamous pirate, Blackbeard, which continues after you clear each level. Even ninjas are involved, and we all know that there’s nothing cooler than pirates and ninjas.

There are multiple cannons at your disposal, and taking control of each one is done by tapping on them. Tap towards the line of cannonballs to fire your ball towards them. Sometimes there are powerups in the levels that show up as spinning crates. Fire a cannonball at them to break them and get the powerup. You can hold up to three powerups, and to use one, tap the one you want and then fire the powerup where you want it. Powerups range from bombs, chain shots, and color removers.

Between the multiple cannons and powerups, the game has a nice, fast pace to it that makes it exciting. If you get interrupted and leave the game, you can resume right where you left off without missing anything.

The only flaw to Blackbeard’s Assault at this point is the lack of a scoreboard to record your best scores, and compare them to others playing the game.

Visually the game looks great, and the cutscenes sport excellent art work. Explosions from the bomb powerups are also visceral and make you look forward to using those powerups just to see the carnage. The different levels all have their own unique designs, resembling pirate maps, and each one looks great. Sound effects and music are both excellent, especially when a large chain reaction occurs and you hear a Johnny Depp-like “Saavy!” or “Avast!”

As fun as the online Flash version is, the iPhone version is even better as it makes it easy to switch between cannons and fire where you tap. This effectively makes the game a frantic, yet fun puzzle game with lots of staying power. While there are other games of similar type to Blackbeard’s Assault, such as Puzzloop ($7.99 – Free Demo) and Cronk ($7.99), I find myself enjoying Blackbeard’s Assault far more.
