Astraware Announces Platypus Port

Did you know that the duck-billed platypus, one of God’s most adorable creations, has a pair of spurs on its hind legs that can deliver an excruciatingly painful dose of venom capable of killing small animals and “incapacitating” humans? True story.

I was excited to see that Astraware is releasing a shoot’em-up called Platypus for iPhones, imagining that the semi-aquatic mammals would take to the skies and shoot down enemy ships. Alas and aquack alack, it looks like the title is actually about piloting a fighter plane nicknamed “Platypus.”

The colorful arcade-style game still looks interesting, though, as every graphical element has been constructed out of clay and photographed by a digital camera to drop into the game. According to the “Sneak Peek” video embedded below, the non-billed craft is maneuvered by tilting the iPhone.

Touch Arcade, which posted the video and news, notes that the game has already been released for PC, Mac, and mobile platforms. It even saw a PSP release in 2006! Astraware’s other iPhone games include GTS World Racer ($4.99), Golden Skull ($0.99), and Glyph ($1.99).

For such fantastic animals, there really aren’t enough games about the Ornithorhynchus Anatinus. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Naxat Soft’s Motteke Tamago with Ganbare! Kamonohashi for Sega Saturn. Developers, if you’re looking for a void to fill in the iPhone gaming market, here it is!
