Console RPG publisher Square Enix has released Crystal Defenders ($7.99), its first title for the iPhone and iPod Touch. A free Lite version is also available, which includes the first 20 levels of gameplay.
Crystal Defenders is a Tower Defense-styled strategy game featuring character classes from the Nintendo DS SRPG title Final Fantasy Tactics A2. You can see little Black Mages and Chocobos in the screenshot to the left here. Adorable! You’ll also notice the game’s control pad-like touch input device, which occupies an awful lot of screen real estate, but should hopefully offer precise controls as a tradeoff.
Crystal Defenders includes over 300 stages spread across three game worlds. An official website is set up here, though it has yet to be updated since the game’s release.

Nice to finally see Squaresoft get into the iPhone gaming market. I really hope they can port the Final Fantasy Tactics series over to Apple’s platform. Would be even better to see the Final Fantasy RPG series make an appearance.
I am glad to see Square Enix in the Iphone market as well, but they had better fix their interface on their next game (or this one for that matter) – what an ugly looking TD game. I played the lite version, and it is fairly fun once you get past the huge blue orb taking up half your screen – I just can’t pay the $7.99 for the full game though.
This is so disappointing to me. This is obviously just a direct port of a regular cell phone game. I expect more from square. “the creeps!” makes much better use of the iPhone. It has better graphics and a much better interface. It’s the only tower defense game I know that uses the accelerometer. Why couldn’t square do that??
