After a slight delay due to some last-minute bugs, Apex Designs has at last released its impressive-looking Grand Theft Auto-styled adventure game Payback ($6.99). Originally designed for the Amiga (no, seriously), Payback eventually saw release for the Game Boy Advance, GamePark’s GP2X, and Macintosh platforms. This week’s iPhone release is an enhanced remake of the title.
Payback includes nearly all of the features and details seen in Grand Theft Auto’s early days, and comes complete with a similar overhead viewpoint. Players will carjack dozens of different vehicles and travel through 11 different cities to complete missions and cause a good deal of general mayhem.
Early App Store customer reviews for Payback are universally positive, and the screenshots look great. I’d really like to give this one a try. Note, however, that the game requires 221 megabytes of free space on your iPhone or iPod Touch, and user reports indicate that installation requires upwards of 800 megabytes. Assuming you’ve got the space for it, though, you’re not likely to find a better-looking GTA clone on the iPhone anytime soon.
