Game Stooge reports that the landmark baseball simulation title Earl Weaver Baseball is currently being ported to the iPhone platform. The game’s original co-creator Eddie Dombrower is heading the port, which will be given the new title EWB Baseball upon its App Store release.
Originally released in 1987 for MS-DOS, Amiga, and Apple II platforms, Earl Weaver Baseball represented a major step forward for the sports simulation genre. While previous console and computer sports titles featured simple, arcade-like gameplay, Earl Weaver Baseball’s focus on realism made it a standout in its time, and its success helped to establish Electronic Arts’ EA Sports brand.
Earl Weaver Baseball introduced a number of features that are now standard for the sports genre. The title was the first baseball sim to include multiple stadiums, voice synthesis, and the ability to simulate a full season. Earl Weaver Baseball was also the first sports game to offer both player-driven arcade gameplay and a simulation-styled manager mode, though Game Stooge indicates that the iPhone port will focus entirely on the team management aspect of the original title.
No release date for EWB Baseball has yet been announced.
