PopCap Releases Bookworm for iPhone, $4.99

Despite emerging as one of the iPhone’s early success stories, casual games powerhouse PopCap Games has seemingly had little interest in the platform since the release of Bejeweled 2 in July of last year. In the months that followed, the company never followed up with a second release for the platform, even though Bejeweled 2 consistently remains one of the App Store’s biggest sellers from week to week.

Today, PopCap ports another one of its most popular franchises to the iPhone with the release of Bookworm ($4.99). Bookworm’s premise should be familiar to iPhone users by now — players must link connected letters to form words. Longer words or the use of uncommon letters will score more points.

It’s such a familiar concept, in fact, that the title seems like an odd choice for PopCap to release at this point in the iPhone’s lifespan. The App Store is notorious for its glut of Boggle clones, and successful titles like Wurdle and WordsWorth leave little room for competition.

Bookworm has even been surpassed by PopCap itself — its sequel, Bookworm Adventures, expands on the simple premise with RPG elements, adding much-needed depth and longevity. It should be interesting to see whether the PopCap name can make Bookworm stand out in the App Store’s crowded word game category.
