id Software Releases Wolfenstein 3D Port for iPhone, $4.99

id Software founder and Doom programmer John Carmack has released an iPhone port of the classic PC first-person shooter Wolfenstein 3D. Built from the ground up with the iPhone in mind, Wolfenstein 3D Classic ($4.99) features an all-new slide-based control scheme, which works well enough to merit an average review score of five stars from more than 30 satisfied App Store customers.

Wolfenstein 3D’s iPhone port simulates a pair of joysticks for movement, which players can manipulate with their thumbs. App Store response indicates that movement and strafing feel as natural as they did in the PC original. Shooting is accomplished by hitting a separate button. The only major control change in the iPhone version concerns doors — they’ll open automatically as players approach. This applies to secret doors as well, which should eliminate a lot of the guesswork and random wall-pushing present in the original title.

Though this new version apparently lacks the multiple difficulty settings found in the PC original [Update: The App Store comments lie! All difficulty settings are intact], Wolfenstein 3D Classic includes 60 levels in all, which should be more than enough to keep players busy until id’s announced iPhone port of Wolfenstein RPG is released.

The difficulty levels are perfectly intact… try selecting New Game instead of Continue Game… why there’s a continue option upon the first boot up is beyond me, but if you start a new game, it lets you choose… kinda shocked you didn’t poke around and find it.

Thanks for the correction — fixing it now. I was just going by what the App Store comments said, so I guess there’s some confusion out there.

I’m very disappointed in the control scheme. Buttons on the screen to substitute for a controller? C’mon Carmack.

I think our game Caster will set a new standard for first and third person controls.

Seriously, I was shocked when some people said they preferred our iPhone control scheme to the controller. To me that says it works and we can do away with a dpad and angle button on the screen.
