Resident Evil: Degeneration Premieres in App Store, $6.99

Capcom’s flagship survival horror franchise arrives for the iPhone with the release of Resident Evil: Degeneration ($6.99), a 3D action title based upon the recently released CG-animated movie of the same name. Degeneration vaguely resembles Resident Evil 4 in terms of gameplay — players control RE4 protagonist Leon Kennedy, who must shoot his way through a zombie-filled airport and rescue the survivors trapped inside.

The iPhone version of Resident Evil: Degeneration appears to be based on a previously released N-Gage adaptation, which in turn was a vastly improved version of the Degeneration title released for Java mobile platforms. Degeneration uses the iPhone’s accelerometer for limited gameplay functionality. Players will tilt the device to reload and shake it to shrug off zombies who invade Leon’s personal space.

Though I can’t offer any insight as to how well it plays, I’ve got to say that this is the most impressive-looking survival horror title I’ve seen on the iPhone so far. Most of the better-looking zombie shooters I’ve seen offer limited gameplay at best, and more robust efforts like Trapped: Undead Infection often suffer due to low presentation quality. If Degeneration’s gameplay can match the quality of its visuals, this one could easily win over Resident Evil series fans.

App Store response has proven positive as well, and the game compares favorably with Capcom’s previously released port of Resident Evil: Degeneration. [...]
