Square Enix’s Final Fantasy-branded tower defense title Crystal Defenders gets a sequel with today’s release of Vanguard Storm ($4.99). This follow-up is no mere expansion pack, however, as Vanguard Storm features greatly overhauled gameplay that is much better suited to the iPhone and iPod Touch hardware.
If you’ll remember, the original release of Crystal Defenders earned widespread criticism due to a rushed porting job, which relegated gameplay to a small window and assigned controls to a tiny on-screen directional pad. The game was vastly improved with the release of a 2.0 update, however, which brought an entirely new control scheme and enhanced gameplay performance.
Vanguard Storm further builds upon the improvements made with Crystal Defenders, as gameplay is now driven by a touch-based interface by default, and the maps take advantage of the full expanse of the iPhone’s screen.
Square Enix has additionally released a free Lite demo version, so you can check out the improvements for yourself. The lower price point of the full version only sweetens the deal. Though mistakes were made with Crystal Defenders, Square Enix has definitely learned from them, and it’s encouraging to know that they’re willing to stick with their commitment to the platform with an improved sequel.
