Free App Roundup, May 9th – 15th Edition

Every Friday, FingerGaming rounds up the best, worst, and weirdest free iPhone and iPod Touch games released over the past week in the iTunes App Store.

This week’s free releases include demo editions of Pinball Dreaming and Leaf Trombone, along with free full versions of Denny’s Dance Allnighter and Expedition Africa: The Game.

- Denny’s Dance Allnighter (Bluebird Software)
It’s about time that someone combined my least favorite food with my least favorite music. Enjoy off-sync Dance Dance Revolution-styled rhythm gameplay backed by a selection of music tracks from terrible indie bands. It’s still better than eating at Denny’s.

- Pinball Dreaming: Pinball Dreams Lite (Cowboy Rodeo)
The Amiga classic pinball sim gets the free iPhone treatment this week. This version gives you full access to the Beat Box table. Hint: aim for the “rock da house!” part of the board.

- Expedition Africa: The Game (Pod Digital Design)
The History Channel presents…The Oregon Trail. In Africa. You travel the route that Henry Stanley took as he searched for the missing Dr. David Livingstone, facing danger and (I assume) dysentery along the way. It’s still better than eating at Denny’s.

- Dark Raider Lite (Egerter Software)
Gauntlet meets Zelda meets free. Also worth noting is that the full version recently dropped in price from $7.99 to 99 cents — a bargain if there ever was one. The discount is temporary, though, so if you enjoy the demo, you’d be wise to pick up the full version as soon as possible.

- SmallBall Pinball, Grand Canyon (Edward Annunziata)
The first table in this planned “pinball saga” is available completely free of charge. Nice! The App Store seriously needs more representation from the video pinball genre.

- iDroids Lite (Artificial Life)
This cute little platformer somehow contains “suggestive themes” later on in the game. I didn’t get far enough to see the robot sex for myself, but maybe you’ll have more luck. More importantly, it has a grappling hook!

- Leaf Trombone: Lite & Free (Smule)
The makers of the iPhone-exclusive Ocarina bring a musical instrument app that iPod Touch users can also enjoy, thanks to a touch-driven interface. It’s got an online music composition judging component, too, which is pretty awesome.

- Vir2L Base Jumper Lite (Vir2L Studios)
Yet another parachuting simulator fails to include appropriately hilarious consequences for not opening your chute. This one at least has the decency to play a Wilhelm scream when you hit the ground, but it could definitely do more. Sorry guys, I have high standards.

- Cosmic One FREE (oeFun)
This full version shape-matching puzzler may be simple in concept (match falling geometric pieces with the appropriate slots in a rotating cylinder), but it’s engaging enough, at least for a short while. Sort of reminds me of Roogoo, actually.
