Review: The Creeps!

Rating: ★★★★★

Because of the constant influx of tower defense games on the iPhone, I overlooked The Creeps! the first time around. It wasn’t until its latest patch that I actually noticed it, and boy, am I glad that I did. If you took the wacky art style of SpongeBob SquarePants and crossed it with a solid tower defense game, you would get The Creeps!

The game’s main objective is to keep the enemies, the Creeps, from reaching the end of each path, where a peaceful sleeper is. But wait, there’s more! In between shooting down waves of enemies, players also have to clear out obstacles along the path. Towers can’t be built on spaces occupied by these obstacles, and believe me, it takes a bit of shooting to get some pesky rocks out of prime real estate.

The Creeps! offers two modes of play. In the more conventional survival mode, players fend off waves of Creeps, usually culminating in a boss Creep. If too many Creeps make it to the sleeper, it’s game over.

The second mode, which I found more challenging, is more offense-oriented. Players must build towers from a bed toward the door where the Creeps emerge. Since there are obstacles in the construction path, part of the strategy is clearing them away and building closer and closer to the door until it’s possible for the towers to attack the door while they’re not busy with defense.

The game offers a healthy handful of Creeps to deal with. There are fast moving bats, slow moving ghouls, vampires, zombie girls, and a few surprises. As the first few stages went by, I found myself eager to try the next just to see what new enemy would come out of the door. Just what do zombies and ghosts have to do with tower defense? I assume the object is to keep the frightful things from reaching the sleeper so that he doesn’t get any nightmares.

Tower types in The Creeps! are as varied as the monsters: ray guns for all-around shooting, bottles of glue for slowing enemies down, boomerangs for area damage, and special non-tower weapons which make use of the iPhone’s accelerometer.

The special weapons are incredibly powerful, but can only be used once for a short amount of time before having to re-charge again. The most useful one I’ve found is the oil slick, which causes a stage’s entire path to be covered in oil. Tilting the iPhone so that the Creeps have to climb “uphill” will slow them down so that your towers get extra time to deal the hurt.

Anyone who calls himself a tower defense fan should give The Creeps! a try. The artist certainly did a fantastic job with the visuals. It may not be the most challenging game in its genre, but it definitely is one of the more entertaining ones. The game’s high production values, especially in the eye-candy category, make the purchase a no-brainer at its regular price and a steal now that it’s on sale for $1.
