ngmoco Scales LiveFire Graphics to iPhone 3GS Performance

Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, ngmoco co-founder Neil Young revealed that the company has no plans to make games specifically for the improved iPhone 3GS hardware announced on Monday. Instead, ngmoco will scale each of its upcoming titles to the different performance specifications of the iPhone 3G, the iPod Touch, and the iPhone 3GS.

In some cases, the modifications will extend beyond mere performance tweaks. 3GS owners will notice slightly better graphics in ngmoco’s upcoming first-person shooter LiveFire, for example.

“We’re scaling the imagery based on the performance of the device, so if you’ve got a 3GS, the game’s going to look better and run at a great frame rate,” said Young. “And if you’re on an iPhone 3G, the game will look a little bit different, but the frame rate will be the same, ’cause obviously performance and speed are actually an important part of a cool first person shooter gameplay experience.”

While it’s admirable that ngmoco would strive to make their games equally enjoyable for owners of all three hardware versions, one has to wonder if other developers will put forth the same effort. Soon after the release of the 2nd generation iPod Touch, players noted that some prominent titles — the initial release of i Love Katamari, for one — ran noticeably better on the iPod Touch than they did on the iPhone.

The release of the iPhone 3GS will likely bring about similar concerns. Young’s comments reveal that some developers may soon be faced with the choice of either making games exclusively for the 3GS or taking the time to scale their projects to all three platforms.
