Apple’s latest software update for the iPhone and iPod Touch is now available for download from iTunes. The iPhone OS 3.0 upgrade is a free download for iPhone owners, while iPod Touch users will need to purchase the software for $9.95.
The iPhone OS 3.0 brings a number of long-awaited features to iPhone and iPod Touch devices. Functionality-wise, the update adds a landscape-oriented keyboard, a cut-and-paste option for text, and support for MMS messaging. The OS additionally includes an improved calendar, Internet tethering via a USB or Bluetooth connection, and voice memos for iPhone users.
The update adds several features to the gaming capabilities of the iPhone and iPod Touch as well, particularly in terms of multiplayer options. Gamers and developers can expect improved peer-to-peer connectivity in the upgrade, along with the much-discussed possibility of downloadable content via microtransactions.
Perhaps the most exciting 3.0 addition (in terms of gaming, at least) is one that I wasn’t aware of until just a few minutes ago — the new OS adds support for as-of-yet unspecified third-party gaming accessories. Does this mean that the iPhone will finally get a proper control pad? More importantly, will there soon be games that support its use?
I’m personally minutes away from taking the plunge and updating my iPod Touch. Enjoy my ten dollars, Apple.
