Yep, it’s out. The iPhone 3G S premiered in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom today at Apple Store retail locations, which opened early for the event.
As reported earlier, the iPhone 3G S offers improved battery life, a faster processor that improves application load times and performance, and a variety of new hardware features, including a digital compass and an upgraded camera with video capture functionality.
Gaming-wise, the 3G S includes support for the OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics API, which allows for richer visuals in future App Store titles. Some speculate that OpenGL ES 2.0 also has the potential to splinter the App Store’s library, given its incompatibility with the older version of OpenGL ES supported by the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch.
For the time being, however, most applications currently available in the App Store should be compatible with the new 3G S hardware, assuming that they have been tested to work with the bundled iPhone OS 3.0.
These are exciting times for the iPhone development community. Here’s looking forward to a new generation of applications that take advantage of the 3G S’s capabilities. Let’s leave the fart applications behind us, though, shall we?
