Electronic Arts has released Mass Effect Galaxy ($4.99), an iPhone and iPod Touch-exclusive entry in its spacefaring RPG franchise.
Though not developed by series creator BioWare (the developer is currently working on the console and PC sequel, Mass Effect 2), Mass Effect Galaxy boasts many of the same features that defined the original game in the franchise.
Galaxy’s gameplay is a familiar mix of action and narrative, modified to fit the iPhone’s capabilities. Players will take on enemies from an overhead perspective, choosing targets and firing via a touch-based interface. Dialog sequences feature a new narrative wheel mechanic.
EA notes that two of the main characters in Mass Effect Galaxy will also feature in the upcoming Mass Effect 2. While the events that unfold in the iPhone spinoff title will likely have little bearing on Mass Effect 2′s storyline, EA suggests that Galaxy players will be able to gain additional insight into the backgrounds and motivations of prominent characters in the Mass Effect universe.
