In this semi-regular feature, FingerGaming rounds up the best, worst, and weirdest free iPhone and iPod Touch games released over the past week in the iTunes App Store.
This week’s free releases include demo editions of Eliss and Castle of Magic, along with free full versions of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Bent It!
- Castle of Magic Free (Gameloft)
Gameloft’s latest iPhone release is a neat-looking platformer with a visual style that recalls Namco’s Klonoa series. Assuming the controls are workable, this could end up being a surprise hit.
- Eliss Lite (Steph Thirion)
Thirion’s space-themed multitouch puzzler has been greatly improved over the past few months, adding a series of levels that give the game a much smoother difficulty curve. I already liked the original version of Eliss a lot, and the game in its current form is very close to earning a perfect five-star rating.
- Bent It! (Odin Gaming)
“The first free-kick shooting soccer game in iPhone / iPod Touch platform.” Only free for a limited time, so best hop on this while you can.
- Fast & Furious The Game: Test Drive (I-play)
I somehow missed seeing the fourth FnF movie in theaters, even though I’ve seen all of the previous ones. Don’t ask me why. TFATF was stupid fun. 2 Fast was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen. And then Tokyo Drift somehow ended up being genuinely entertaining. I wonder how the fourth one turned out?
- G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra — Basic Training (Paramount)
I’m not going to lie to you — the hand-to-hand combat portion of this game is awful. The shooting range segment is a surprisingly competent clone of Metal Gear Solid Touch, though. It’s about as deep an experience as you’d expect, but I certainly enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
- Crazy Penguin Catapult 2 Free (Digital Chocolate)
A Christmas release helped boost App Store sales for the original Crazy Penguin Catapult, but the sequel seems to be doing just fine here in the month of June. People love abusing penguins no matter what time of year it is, I guess.
- Dig Dug Remix Lite (Namco Networks)
One of Namco’s somewhat less-beloved franchises gets the iPhone treatment, with predictable results. Poor controls grafted onto a port of an already lame PSP game don’t really do anything for me. Your mileage may vary, though.
- Symtards (Kaplowieland)
Features: “Ultra-minimalist graphics. Totally frustrating game play. Inscrutable symbols to memorize. Insulting dialogs when you lose.” I like the cut of this game’s jib.
- Mine Runner Lite (ARCTAN)
Originally released as iLodeRunner, this unofficial port basically clones everything about the original Apple II puzzler but the name. And it even tried to take that, too. Still, if you like Lode Runner, this game exists for you to play.
- Toilet Cat (Ernest Properties)
So it’s come to this.
