TapStar: Rhythm Action with Sony’s Music Catalog, $0.99

After recently securing a unique licensing agreement from Sony Music Entertainment, iPhone developer EpicTilt has released TapStar ($0.99), a Dance Dance Revolution-like rhythm game that features a growing library of downloadable music from a number of popular Sony artists.

Interestingly, TapStar serves as both a game and a promotional tool for Sony’s catalog. In future releases, players will be able to sample tracks from the label’s artists, play along with available note charts for free, and then purchase the full versions of individual tracks through a seamless App Store-like interface.

EpicTilt claims that the licensing relationship effectively gives full access to Sony’s music catalog, and that additional levels will only be limited by the developers’ own musical taste and the time it takes to create playable note patterns.

TapStar’s initial track list features the following songs:

  • Elvis – Suspicious Minds
  • Lit – My Own Worst Enemy
  • Romantics – What I Like About You
  • John Mayer – Say
  • Britney Spears – I’m A Slave 4 U
  • P!nk – Get the Party Started
  • Sarah McLachlan – Fallen
  • Cyndi Lauper – Girls Just Want to Have Fun
  • Warrant – Heaven
  • Metro Station – Shake It
  • TLC – Creep

It’s an impressively varied lineup, and the library will expand with future updates. EpicTilt expects to have playable tracks from NOFX, Lagwagon, and Bullet for My Valentine ready in the coming month, with a total of 60 songs to be available in TapStar’s first three months of release.
