Pocket God Revenue Stream Analyzed, Reveals Sales Data for Chart-Topping Apps

Dean Takahashi at VentureBeat presents an interesting look at Bolt Creative’s episodic Pocket God series, revealing the company’s strategies for App Store success and detailing how much revenue the title generates on a daily basis.

According to Takahashi’s article, Pocket God creators Allan Dye and Dave Castelnuevo found that their app could remain a consistent seller if they responded quickly to fan reactions and suggestions. Multiple Pocket God episodes are released each month, and the game has maintained a consistent presence in the App Store’s Top Paid Apps chart since its debut in January of this year.

Pocket God’s popularity allowed the title to keep the top chart spot for 26 days throughout the month of March. During its reign at #1, the 99-cent Pocket God sold around 18,000 copies daily, for a daily revenue total of about $12,600, after discounting Apple’s 30 percent share of the profits.

Pocket God’s creators also offer a rare glimpse at the sales numbers required to reach other spots in the top ten. At second place, Pocket God sold around 10,000 copies per day. When it fell to fifth place, the app earned 6,000 downloads daily.

Currently, Pocket God ranks as the ninth-best-selling app in any category. It’s an impressive feat, considering that the title has received no paid advertising whatsoever during its six months of release.

It says that this game had no paid advertising but it was promoted on XM Radio’s comedy channel 150. Was that not paid for?

It was? We did get a little promotion from a comedian named Jackie Martling because we created an app for him, so its possible he did that for us….but a) we didn’t pay him and b) really, how many people really listen to XM comedy channel 150? Full-on Adult Swim advertising doesn’t push their apps into the top ten. So far, we haven’t paid for any advertising and Apple has only given us a TINY amount of promotional space in comparison to the love they give the bigger publishers. Our efforts focused on using free stuff like Facebook, Blogspot and YouTube.
