With ports available for everything from the Amiga to the Sega Dreamcast to Xbox Live Arcade, Team17′s Worms is synonymous with the turn-based artillery genre. The series made its iPhone debut this weekend with the release of the latest entry in the series, simply titled Worms ($4.99).
Worms arrives on the iPhone complete with its goofy cast of worm characters and a variety of outlandish weapons. Players can expect to lob banana bombs and deploy exploding sheep using a new control scheme specially designed for the iPhone’s touch screen.
It’s worth noting that Worms in its current form only supports multiplayer gameplay on a single iPhone or iPod Touch device — no ad-hoc, Wi-Fi, or 3G multiplayer functionality is included. App Store reviews also warn that the port suffers from lag and a poor framerate.
Team17 promises that iPhone OS 3.0-specific features are coming soon in the next update. Hopefully the next version will also fix the game’s technical issues and improve its limited multiplayer functionality.
