Review: Mecho Wars

Rating: ★★★☆☆

One look at any screenshot for Mecho Wars and any gamer can tell you where its inspiration comes from: Nintendo’s strategy franchise Advance Wars. Considering there’s no official Advance Wars game on the iPhone yet, this is the next best thing.

Mecho Wars pits the Winged Crusade against the Landians in a turn-based strategy game. There are bases to capture, units to build, and of course, enemies to destroy. Anyone who has played Advance Wars will feel right at home here.

The sprite-based graphics in this game are distinctive and whimsical. It’s difficult at first to figure out what each unit is for each side, but after a few battles, things start looking more familiar. The vibrant colors and simple tiled environment make me feel warm and nostalgic for the SNES days.  The actual battle screens have nicely detailed sprites over soft, fantasy-like backgrounds.

In terms of gameplay, Mecho Wars delivers for any fan of the genre. The first few missions, which count as tutorials, are easy, but things start ramping up quickly after. The fact that there’s an in-game clock that affects the environment depending on the time of day is also a nice touch. It gives players a few strategic choices.

The touch-based controls in the game are completely intuitive and need practically no explanation. On-screen buttons are perfectly sized and it’s easy to select units and place them on tiles. What more could one ask for?

While the story isn’t anything to write home about, Mecho Wars offers iPhone owners a way to play Advance Wars on their system, even if it isn’t the official thing. The latest patch also includes a new campaign mode. For fans of the genre, there’s no reason not to get this game.
