The Curse of Skabooki is a pleasing puzzle game with charming music, wonderful art, and a cute-as-a-button main character.
The object of each stage is to get a voodoo doll named Skabooki from his starting position to a goal pit at the bottom of the screen. But wait, there’s a catch: players can’t control Skabooki directly.
Instead, players affect Skabooki’s movement by clearing colored blocks under him in the typical match three fashion. Special blocks with arrows on them push Skabooki in specific directions.
The special blocks, in conjunction with ice as well as teleporters all work to move Skabooki closer to his goal. Although Skabooki is a voodoo doll, having blocks fall on top of him hurts him and automatically subtracts one of his lives.
Judging by the first few stages, the game may look easy at first, but keep in mind that Skabooki doesn’t always start off directly over the goal.
The many stages available as well as three difficulty modes make Skabooki both challenging and rewarding. The first twenty or so levels go by quickly as players familiarize themselves with the different blocks and objects available in the game.
Stages never feel too difficult or cheap no matter how many tries it takes to pass them. The only negative aspect that can be said about the stages is that they take as long as 10 seconds to load, which keeps the game from running as smoothly as it should.
Otherwise, The Curse of Skabooki is a complete package. Great visuals, addictive just-one-more-stage gameplay, and music that’s pleasant to listen to make this game such a joy to play.
The added bonuses of Facebook bragging integration and a healthy list of achievements to unlock are just icing on the cake. Its high production values make the game an absolute steal at $2 for any fan of brain-scratching puzzle games.
