Gameloft Launches FPS Modern Combat: Sandstorm in App Store, $6.99

The first-person shooter genre is a tough nut to crack on the iPhone. Some iPhone FPS developers have implemented complex and configurable control schemes to account for the difference in player input, while others have opted to create new games based on existing assets, to make better use of the device’s touch screen.

Gameloft is trying a little bit of everything with Modern Combat: Sandstorm ($6.99), an original FPS title inspired by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, among other titles.

Modern Combat features multiple control schemes to suit player preference. The default maps movement to a virtual joystick and aiming to screen swipes, which seems like it would work well enough. Alternate control setups use screen tapping and a pair of analog joysticks.

Modern Combat includes 10 missions, each of which will see players shooting lots of bad people with an arsenal of nearly a dozen weapons. Sniper and turret sequences are also included, for added excitement.
