Autobiography: Daniel Johnston’s “Hi, How Are You” frog was a daily sight for me during my college days at UT Austin. Its location near campus always struck me as appropriate. On one side of the street, college students were trying to remain college students for as long as possible. On the other side, homeless people would accost those college students for money. In the middle was Jeremiah the frog, balancing the Drag’s impossible ecosystem with a friendly greeting.
So obviously, seeing Jeremiah rendered in 3D and starring in a puzzle-platformer on my iPod Touch is more than a little bizarre. Hi, How Are You ($0.99) is a video game tribute to the art and music of indie artist Daniel Johnston. It also kind of freaks me out.
Described as “the first toon-shaded 3D puzzle-platform game to arrive on the iPhone,” Hi, How Are You challenges players to guide Jeremiah through more than 25 levels as he quests to free himself from Satan’s curse and find true love. Really! The game includes over 20 unlockable achievements, four playable characters, and a soundtrack that collects Johnston’s best work.
