SingSong Karaoke Brings SingStar to Your iPhone

singsong

Esoteric Software’s SingSong Karaoke ($4.99), similar in concept to titles like SingStar and Karaoke Revolution, turns karaoke into a competitive challenge. Players are scored by singing into the iPhone’s microphone and matching pitches with a selected music track.

Now, as potentially exciting as this may be for amateur Rock Band vocalists (myself included), SingSong has some obvious drawbacks. The game only supports 10 tracks from a selection of independent artists, so you won’t be singing along to your favorite hits here. And strangely, the application weighs in at only 0.7 MB in size — hardly enough to contain any music files.

So without any included background music, how are you expected to sing? From what I can gather, SingSong’s solution involves users downloading music and playing it outside of the application, while the iPhone displays lyrics and the correct vocal pitches. It’s an awkward setup, but likely a necessary one, due to issues with music licensing and Apple’s content restrictions.

So while it may be a limited offering in comparison to console karaoke titles, SingSong Karaoke is still an important first step for the karaoke genre on the iPhone. Future titles will hopefully expand on the concept with the inclusion of background music and user-created playlists.

Thanks for the review!

SingSong for the iPhone downloads each song the first time you choose it to play. This spreads the download out over time, otherwise the game would be 30+ megabytes! (10 songs x ~3mb per song)

The 10 songs are fun, but I really wish we could support more songs on the iPhone. We have found that both iPhone development and the Apple submission process has left a bad taste in our mouths. :(

In contrast, we have released SingSong on Android and found both development and submission to be a breeze. As a result, SingSong on Android supports the same 300+ songs as the desktop game, and the desktop game can be used to add support for new songs to play on either the desktop or Android.
