Super Monkey Ball launched with the App Store in July of last year, and served as an early example of both the iPhone’s gaming potential and its shortcomings. While the game was an impressive port and technical achievement, its gameplay was often frustrating, due to a laggy tilt-based control scheme.
Sega has taken customer feedback seriously, and has revealed that the upcoming sequel Super Monkey Ball 2 will feature an overhauled and much more responsive control scheme.
In addition to a stage-based single-player mode, Super Monkey Ball 2 also includes Monkey Bowling, a multiplayer minigame originally found in the console version of Super Monkey Ball. Additional minigames — including Monkey Golf and the perennial favorite Monkey Target — will be released as free downloadable content in 2010.
Super Monkey Ball 2 will feature 115 all-new levels when it launches in the App Store. Sega has already submitted the title to Apple for review, and the final version should show up soon.
