After a successful debut on the Xbox 360 in 2007, Namco Bandai’s retro remake Pac-Man Championship Edition ($2.99) sets its sights on the App Store. The iPhone version of Championship Edition boasts a number of new challenges not found in the original console release.
Pac-Man Championship Edition upgrades the classic arcade formula with morphing mazes, chain-based scoring, and action that gradually ramps up in speed over the course of gameplay.
The iPhone port of Championship Edition features a variety of new control schemes, including a unique dual-stick setup, seen in the screenshot above. Other available options include a thumb swipe method, a pointer-based swipe setup, and a more traditional d-pad interface.
Championship Edition on the iPhone includes a total of 15 challenge courses and 120 missions, though only 20 missions are initially available. The majority of the game’s content can only be unlocked through in-app purchases — a decision that is sure to prove controversial, given the negative customer reaction to Namco’s DLC-heavy Ace Combat Xi.
