You knew it was coming. After testing the App Store market with releases like Song Summoner and Sliding Heroes, Square Enix will at last bring its flagship Final Fantasy franchise to the iPhone later this year with remakes of Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II.
The Final Fantasy series spans multiple console generations, and played a large role in defining the modern RPG experience. The groundbreaking original entry in the series made its Japanese debut in 1987, with a sequel following a year later.
Judging from the screenshots released so far, the iPhone will receive ports of the “Anniversary Edition” remakes of Final Fantasy I and II released for the PlayStation Portable platform in 2007. Both games feature enhanced graphics and sound, and many gameplay mechanics have been updated to minimize player frustration.
The iPhone versions of both games also feature overhauled control input to account for the shift to a touch screen. The screenshot above, for instance, shows an all-new combat interface that replaces Final Fantasy II’s text-based menu with a series of large buttons. It’s assumed that players will also use the touch screen to target enemies and choose menu commands outside of battle.
Square Enix has not yet announced a price or a release date for either game. With Final Fantasy XIII scheduled for a U.S. release in March, however, it seems likely that the iPhone ports of Final Fantasy I and II will show up in the App Store soon.
