If you’ve ever tried out the free game, Torus Trooper, an abstract shooter much in the same vein as Tempest, then you’ll want to check out Vektrax ($0.99). Click on the screenshot above to watch a gameplay video showing Vektrax in action.
A virtual reality roller-coaster race into oblivion. Use tilt and touch to steer and boost your ship down the Vektrax! Avoid enemies, power-up your weapons and destroy the bosses in this all action 3D shooter. You’ll need lightning fast reactions and nerves of steel to make it onto the leader board.
Vektrax uses the accelerometer to detect the tilt, and you can roll around on the tunnel, but it doesn’t always stay as a tunnel. Other times it becomes a twisting, turning road where you have to avoid the edge to keep from slowing down and losing your shields. The object of the game is to reach each checkpoint in time, by destroying enemies for fuel. Fuel allows you to speed up, although if you get maximum fuel you get a powered-up weapon.
All in all, I found the game to be pretty entertaining, and the only issue I had was with the camera controls. You have to hold the iPhone/iPod Touch right up to your face to keep from looking down and not being able to see far enough down the tunnel to spot enemies. A calibration option would fix this issue.
