
There’s been an influx of games that bear a resemblance to the classic Missile Command game from Atari. In fact, one of them isn’t a clone but an official modern version from Atari themself. Besides the one from Atari, there’s a few others that copy that winning formula and are available today in the App Store. In Battle of the Missile Command Clones, we take a look at them all to find out which is the best of them.
In Missile Command, you have a number of nukes/missiles on the ground that you can shoot down falling bombs. The object is to take them down before they take out your missile launchers. Some games give you a limited number of missiles to shoot down bombs with for each round. As you progress, more bombs fall and they fall faster and faster.

Atari president, Phil Harrison, speaks out about Apple’s App Store and gaming on the iPhone and iPod Touch. He said, “handheld devices and distribution service are “changing the way we consume and interact with media.†Just recently, Atari released two of their classic games in the App Store, bringing those games to a mobile audience; Missile Command ($4.99) and Super Breakout ($4.99).

It’s not uncommon for the App Store to feature retro games, but what has been the case lately is to make sure clones based on those retro games have names that aren’t similar to the classic games, to protect game developers from threats from lawyers. Recently Atari went after games and their developers that had similar gameplay and names to Breakout and Pong.

The developer for Interceptor ($1.99), Pivotal Games, took cues from those events, as the game features gameplay similar to Missile Command. You fire missiles to destroy nukes falling towards the surface. Speaking of Missile Command ($4.99), Atari released their iPhone/iPod Touch version of the classic which includes an Ultra game mode featuring updated graphics and gameplay, as well as the classic version we all know and love.
