I wish I could say “Roguelike on the iPhone!” and hundreds of gamers would just flock to the iTunes App Store and buy The Isle of 8-Bit Treasures, but it’s understandable that some need a little more convincing. Players unfamiliar with roguelikes might want to give this Wikipedia article a quick read. Those familiar with Chunsoft’s Mysterious Dungeon series of games should feel right at home playing The Isle of 8-Bit Treasures.

The game lets players choose from 3 fairly standard classes: a melee class, a magic class, and a ranged class. Instead of a long tutorial, players are quickly brought to a dungeon selection map and can delve right away into some novice dungeons.

Dungeon navigation is done through the on-screen directional pad on the left, while attacking is done with a “hit” button on the right. To change directions without moving, players must hold down the “hit” button and touch in one of the 8 directions.

A limited amount of usable items are stored in item slots at the bottom of the screen. The controls are simple and easy to get used to — after a few seconds, playing the game felt completely natural.

The Isle of 8-Bit Treasures: A Console-Styled Retro Roguelike

8bittreasures

It’s been a while since we’ve heard any iPhone news from Japanese console games publisher Tecmo. Since releasing Annie’s Wild Shot back in June, the company has been hard at work on The Isle of 8-Bit Treasures ($4.99), which premieres today in the App Store.

Similar in style to turn-based dungeon crawlers like Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer and the Izuna series on the Nintendo DS, The Isle of 8-Bit Treasures offers a console-styled take on the roguelike genre. Players wander each randomly generated level picking up loot and defeating monsters for experience points.

Unlike other RPGs, however, death is permanent, and exiting the dungeon reverts your character to his or her starting stats. Gameplay emphasizes careful thought and planning, as each level is filled with enemies, traps, and cursed items that can quickly drain your HP if you aren’t careful.

The Isle of 8-Bit Treasures features 60 levels and three playable characters. The game also includes an option that allows players to create custom weapons and dungeons by using music in their iPhone’s music library.
